Rapid expansion of natural gas development poses a threat to surface waters

چکیده
© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org N gas drilling has dramatically expanded with advances in extraction technology and the need for cleaner burning fuels that will help meet global energy demands. Natural gas is considered a “bridge fuel” to renewable energy resources because its combustion releases fewer contaminants (eg carbon dioxide [CO2], nitrogen oxide [NOx], sulfur oxide [SOx]) than compared with that of coal or petroleum. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (“hydrofracking” or “fracking”) now allow the extraction of vast shale gas reserves previously considered inaccessible or unprofitable. Shale gas production in the US is expected to increase threefold and will account for nearly half of all natural gas produced by 2035 (EIA 2011). This widespread proliferation of new gas wells and the use of modern drilling and extraction methods have now been identified as a global conservation issue (Sutherland et al. 2010). Here, we describe the threats to surface waters associated with increased natural gas development in shale basins and highlight opportunities for research to address these threats.

Reduced salinity tolerance in the Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) is associated with rapid development of a gill interlamellar cell mass: implications of high-saline spills on native freshwater salmonids
Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) are salmonids that have a strict freshwater existence in post-glacial North America. Oil and gas development is associated with production of high volumes of hypersaline water. With planned industrial expansion into northern areas of Canada and the USA that directly overlap grayling habitat, the threat of accidental saline water release poses a significant r...
متن کاملAir Pollution and Infant Mortality: Evidence from the Expansion of Natural Gas Infrastructure
One of the consequences of rapid economic growth and industrialization in the developing world has been deterioration in environmental conditions and air quality. While air pollution is a serious threat to health in most developing countries, environmental regulations are rare and the determination to address the problem is weak due to ongoing pressures to sustain robust economic growth. Under ...

HCCI operating window has two distinct boundaries of knock at higher load region and misfiring/partial burning at lower load region. Moreover, there is no conventional direct way of controlling combustion timing in an HCCI engine. In this research, experimental study were carried out to investigate the effect of thermal and charge stratification on expansion of the operating range of a natural ...

Nowadays, the major challenge of diesel engines development is simultaneous nitrogen oxides and soot emissions reduction without the thermal efficiency drop. Hence, different combustion concepts should be investigated to reach optimum emission and performance conditions in diesel engines without expensive aftertreatment systems. This paper presents the results of a study on a dual fuel (DF) eng...
